Your region, not your status, determines the fund
Whether you are an employee, self-employed, or unemployed no longer affects your child allowance. Since regionalisation, your region decides which funds exist and how applications work. In Flanders, it is the Groeipakket system. In Brussels, Iriscare manages 5 funds. In Wallonia, there are also 5 funds including the public FAMIWAL fund. Within each region, you freely choose which fund pays you.
Free choice, with time limits
In Flanders, your fund choice applies for at least 1 year across all children in your household. If you do not respond to a change within the deadline, you are automatically assigned to FAMIFED after 90 calendar days without choosing yourself. After birth, you have up to 5 years in Flanders to complete the application, so missing the first month does not mean you lose everything. In Wallonia and Brussels, you can join your chosen fund from the 6th month of pregnancy onwards.
